January 2004

Friday 2 January: Pluckley (Kent) Catch a train from London Bridge to Pluckley (near Asford) then ride west through the Kent countryside, following a circuit via Headcorn, Tenterden and Bethersden, then back to Pluckley. About 35 miles, fairly flat but some gentle hills. Meet London Bridge 09:45 for 10:07 train to Pluckley arrive 11:12. Details from Liz 020 8691 2065

Saturday 3rd January: Easy Going Ride. Easy going ride to the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. This ride is designed for beginners and families, but all are welcome. Hilary 07929 722973

Saturday 17 January: Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry. That circular tour that's always different. Stay all day or drop out at lunchtime. An easy 15 or 30 miles. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens 10am. Barry 07905 889 005.

Friday 23 January: London Parks. Southwark Park, Burgess Park, Kennington Park, Battersea Park, Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and back to Greenwich. About 25 miles (or return by train from Central London, about 18 miles). We will ride on a mixture of riverside paths and quiet-as-possible roads in between, with a few main roads. Liz 020 8691 2065

Friday 6 February: Essex Lanes. The Essex lanes ride which was rained off last year. Meet CSG at 9.30 or Liverpool Street (under departures board) for 10.32 train to Hatfield Peverel. Approx. 30 miles through villages south of Braintree, to include cycle friendly tea shop (I don?t think they do any hot food). Return from Hatfield Peverel on 16.18 train. Bring lights. Saturday 7 February: Easy going Ride The Monumental. A gentle ride into the City. Optional Monument climb for a bird's eye view of London. Coffee and / or lunch stop. Train or cycle back. Sunday 8 February: Into the Lighthouse. Into the Lighthouse - Lambeth Cyclists ride An easy downriver exploration, mostly away from traffic, featuring docks, ferries, beaches, and a lighthouse containing a thousand years of music. No hills. Pub lunch. This ride is a collaboration with Forest Row Bike Club from East Grinstead - a chance to show some country cyclists London's maritime delights. Friday 20 February: Waterlink Way. Cycle the Waterlink way path along the Ravensbourne river to Beckenham Place park, then onto Crystal Palace Park, Dulwich Park and visit the Picture Gallery. Saturday 21 February: Whitstable. 9am Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich: the 55 miles to Whitstable. Fastish big roads out of London, then very rural from Dartford onwards. Lunch around 1.30pm in half-way-there Rochester (some will train it there and meet us for the gentler half). Train back from Whitstable or stay the night there. Sunday 22 February: Dover. 11am Whitstable Harbour: the 60 miles to Dover. That start lets people train it down for the day. Wonderful coastal route with one big hill at the end. Lots of drop out stations en route. Train it back from Dover that evening or stay the night there. Barry 07905 889005
Monday 23 February: Hastings. 10am Dover Harbour (by the cross-channel swimmer statue): the 50 miles to Hastings. Big cliffs out of Dover and down to the newish fascinating undercliff Samphire Down channel-tunnel reclaimed area, then flat round Dungeness. Train back from Rye....or Hastings after battling that massive hill.Barry 07905 889005

Friday 5 March: Kentish Weald. Meet London Bridge (outside WH Smith) 10.00am for 10.23 train to Sevenoaks. Ride to Sevenoaks Weald, Chiddingstone, Penshurst, past Hildenborough, Shipbourne, Plaxtol, past Knole Park and back to Sevenoaks for 16.20 train (arr. London Bridge 16.53). Approx. 33 miles almost completely on minor roads - Some hills involved. Liz 020 8691 2065

Saturday 6 March: Easy going Ride Surrey Docks Farm. A gentle ride along the river to Surrey Docks Farm. Meet the animals and stop for a coffee before the ride back. This ride is designed for beginners and families, but all welcome. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens at 10:00am. Kate 020 8858 1594.

Sunday 7 March: Coulsdon South to Brighton. About 45 miles, gently climbing, then slowly descending with a final whizz into Brighton. No Ditchling Beacon, but a couple of smaller climbs. Pace will be fastish. Meet at Peckham Pulse (underneath the big awning on Peckham High Street opposite the end of Rye Lane) 9am, or London Bridge Station main concourse at 9.20 for the 9.38 train to Coulsdon South. Friday 19 March: Lea Valley Towpath. Foot tunnel to Isle of Dogs and roads to Limehouse cut. Towpath, as far as possible along Lea valley through Hackney towards Enfield. We'll go as far as we can, depending on speed of group and path conditions. If the weather has been wet we will probably be slower; expect some muddy bits, but road tyres should be OK. I have applied for a group permit (against all the normal procedures and only being issued for a maximum of 6 cyclists). You can apply for your own permit, which last indefinitely from www.britishwaterways.co.uk. Search under cycling and there is an application form on line. Friday 2 April: Hertfordshire lanes around Stevenage. About 35 miles. Meet 9.15 am at Cutty Sark Gardens for ride to Kings Cross or under departures board at Kings Cross for 10.36am train to Knebworth. Return about 16.30pm. This is an unfamiliar ride for me but it looks flattish and apparently follows small lanes in spite of its close proximity to Stevenage and Hitchin. Liz 020 8691 2065

Good Friday 9th April: Herne Hill Velodrome. Spring picnic, bicycle jumble sale and track racing at Herne Hill Velodrome. Meet 9:00am or 10:30am at Cutty Sark Gardens for a ride to the velodrome. The 9.00 ride will arrive in time to participate in beginners training - a must if you've never ridden on the track before. Friday 16 April: Barnes Wetlands Centre. Riverside path to Wetlands wildlife centre at Barnes. About 30 miles, mostly on towpath with a few minor roads. Meet 10.00 am at Cutty Sark Gardens and ride via Tower Bridge, Waterloo and southern embankment. Across river by Battersea bridge and back again by Hammersmith bridge. Continue on towpath to Barnes. This house was the former residence of William Morris and has been recently featured on BBC television. The ride distance should be about eight miles. An optional ride may take place in the afternoon to Eltham Palace. The original hall was founded by Anthony Bek, one of the Bishops of Durham, and in the last century was taken over by the Courtauld Family. One of the great Art Deco houses in London. Sunday 27 June: Oxleas Wood. From Greenwich cycle along the Thames to the Barrier, then along the Green Chain Walk up to Oxleas Woods. Lunch in the cafe, which has great views. After lunch an explore of the woods. Meet at the Cafe if you want to make your own way there. This ride is suitable for everyone. Saturday 3 July: Easygoing Ride The Millennium Village Fun Day. This will run from 11-3pm. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens 10.00am for a gentle ride along the Thames path to the Millennium Village. Saturday 10th July: A roam in Kent to Lullingstone Villa and Eynsford. The ride will go via Chiselhurst and then quiet country lanes across the M25 to Lullingstone. We'll visit the Roman villa there (entrance fee). Picnic beside the river in the village of Eynsford. This is an excellent ride if you want to move beyond short local rides and get out into the countryside. There are hills, but the ride will be easy paced, and we'll make sure everyone can keep up. Sunday 11th July: Rotherhithe Festival. An easy going family ride up the Thames Path to meet up with Southwark Cyclists to take a ride round the Rotherhithe Peninsula, calling in to all sorts of open buildings, for example the Brunel pump house and the Lavender Pond museum. Saturday 31 July: The Legend. Simply Nothing Like It! THE DUNWICH DYNAMO Number 12. Not a Southwark orGreenwich Cyclists ride as such. There's no formal entry procedure and it's free. It's an unsupported (yes, really) overnight ride to Dunwich Beach in Suffolk along, once out of London, surprisingly deserted lanes. 120 miles. Then swim. Or not. Coach back tickets will cost £13 in advance, more on the day. Trains back from Manningtree 50 miles away. Saturday 4 September: Easy and Short Dulwich Dynamo LCC Ride. Meet at Olleys, Brockwell Park at 7pm or Brockwell Park tavern at 8pm. As a humorous antidote to the Dunwich Dynamo ride, Lambeth Cyclists present the 'Dulwich Dynamo'. On the night of a full moon, a chance to catch up with cycling friends and make new ones without having to sit on a saddle for 12 hours in the dark. Meet at Olleys for fish and chips at 7pm to eat in Brockwell Park, or else at the Brockwell Park Tavern (133 Dulwich Road SE24 0NG, closest to Herne Hill BR) at 8pm for drinks, followed by some more local taverns. Sunday 19th September: Greenwich Car Free Day. Greenwich Cyclists will be celebrating Car Free day with an information stall and a Dr. Bike session on the roads closed near Greenwich market. Later we will take in some of the Jazz sessions in local pubs in the Riverfront Jazz Festival. So come along a noise and pollution free day, with some jazz. Greenwich Council Car Free Day website.

Sunday 19 September: Charity Cycle ride in Kent. Ride round some Kentish lanes in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care starting in Godden Green, Sevenoaks at 9am. Two routes - 50 miles or 88 miles. All riders will be timed and those on the longer route given a target for Bronze, Silver or Gold standard. All riders will enjoy a meal after they have reached the finish. Saturday 2 October: Easy going ride. Museum in Docklands A gentle ride to the Museum in Docklands. Admission charge of £5 for adults, £3 for concessions, free for students and under 16's. All tickets are valid for 1 year and are also valid for exhibitions at the Museum of London. This ride is designed for beginners and families, but all welcome. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. Sunday 3 October: The Ride of the Falling Leaves. Mosquito Bikes annual classic. 50 and 70 mile circles from Herne Hill Velodrome over the Surrey Hills, in aid of Lavender Trust Breast Cancer. The ride starts and finishes at Herne Hill Velodrome in south London and is followed by food and drinks in the Velodrome bar.

Sunday 17 October: In Search of Sunday Lunch. The aim is to get Sunday Lunch at one of the cafes we like - such as the Dagenham City Farm, Oxleas Woods cafe, Avery Hill cafe. Or we might find somewhere new! This ride will be suitable for everybody - the object is to explore, and to get some pre- and post- lunch exercise. Sunday 24 October: Romney Marshes. A paced-for-all ride of about 40 miles through Folkstone's undercliff gardens, the seashore way, the Royal Military Canal towpath, Romney Marshes, St Mary's Bay, Lydd-on-Sea, and the unreal shingle deserts of Dungeness. Big choice lunch at the rather good Britannia. Train back from tea-stoppe Rye...or Hastings after the one massive hill. Sunday 14 November: Whitstable to Dover Meet at Whitstable Harbour 10:00am for a 55 mile coastal trip through 13 different resorts to Dover.
Monday 15 November: Dover and more sea to Hastings.
