Friday 21 January: Hoo/Isle of Grain Penninsula. This ride includes a visit to Dickens (Great Expectation) churchyard at Cooling. Thankfully the London Airport extension is not going to be here! About 30 miles, mostly flat but a few short hills.

Option 2: Meet Greenwich Cutty Sark Gardens at 9:00am for a 25 mile mostly main road ride to Gravesend and meet those arriving by train for the remainder of the day.

The ride will be an all day leisurely explore around the outside (mostly) of some of London's most exciting new buildings of the last 20 years by Foster and Partners. Saturday 12 March: Grand Union Canal to Watford. Join a leisurely 40 mile ride which follows the 18th Century Grand Union Canal out of London through the picturesque Colne Valley to Watford. This will be a totally flat ride with lots of jumping off points if you really have to get home (we are close to a tube station at every stage of the ride). Friday 1 April: The Lee Valley Towpath. About 30 miles. Foot tunnel to Isle of Dogs and roads to Limehouse cut. Towpath, as far as possible along Lea valley through Hackney towards Enfield. We'll go as far as we can, depending on speed of group and path conditions. We can either keep riding north and take a train back or ride out and back again. If the weather has been wet we will probably be slower; expect some muddy bits, but road tyres should be OK. I have a group permit (against all the normal procedures and only being issued for a maximum of 6 cyclists). You can apply for your own permit, which last indefinitely from British Waterways. Sat/Sun 9/10 April: Whitstable and the Kent Coast Saturday starts with the hard heavy roads out of south London that soften right after Dartford and stay that way through Gravesend and the Shorne Marshes, the garden of Kent, Rochester lunch, the new dyke-top path out of Faversham. Overnight stay in lovely Whitstable about 65 miles later. (I'm in at the central Duke of Cumberland near the harbour for dinner too. £60 for a B&B double. Helpful Whitstable tourist office will have cheaper options: 01227 275482).
Sunday is a coastal ozone overdose through 13 very different seaside resorts...Herne Bay, Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate, lovely Sandwich, Deal, Walmer, up the chalky cliffs via dry valley Otty Bottom then the drop into Dover for the train home 55 miles later. Most of those last resorts have mainline stations for earlier returns and a swim may not be resistable. After Whitstable.

Sunday 8 May: CTC Anniversary of the Rail Excursions which took place in 1955/56 from London to the Midlands.
On Sunday 8th May a specially chartered train will go early morning from Clapham Junction through to Watford Junction to the Midlands, to Rugby. Rides in the area will then be led by local DA people.
CTC Rail Consultant Dave Holladay, has aimed to restage the rides. It has not been found possible to negotiate for a steam excursion but a special modern loco will haul carriages for up to 400 passengers and bicycles. Cost will be around £30 per ticket. A Food pack can be ordered (in advance).

Sunday 12 June: The 2nd North Kent Bikeathon for Leukaemia Research. Catford Rotary Club have joined up with Leukaemia Research this year to organise a new event the North Ken Bikeathon, through the lanes of North Kent with a choice of 15 or 30 mile routes. Starting and finishing from Norman Park, Bromley, Hayes Lane entrance.
This charity cycle ride is a non-competitive event open to amateur cyclists of all ages. Two routes from Norman Park in Bromley cover either 15 or 30 miles of varied cycling around the north Kent and Surrey borders. From Hayes through Nash, Biggin Hill, Downe, Cudham, Horns Green and along the beautiful and historic Pilgrim's Way, through Tatsfield, Chelsham, and Fickleshole. The route will be marshalled and back up will be provided in the form of refreshments and basic medical and mechanical assistance on route. Progress will be monitored by mobile telephones. Saturday 23 July: The Legend. Dunwich Dynamo Number 13. Not a Greenwich ride as such. There's no formal entry procedure and it's free. It's an unsupported (yes, really) overnight ride to Dunwich Beach in Suffolk along, once out of London, surprisingly deserted lanes. 120 miles. Then swim. Or not. Sunday 1pm coach back tickets are £13 until 30 June, £20 after that. Sunday 14 August: Frinton. Meet 9am sharp at Southwark Needle or 9.15am at Liverpool Street station for the 9.30am train to Manningtree. £8.50 return for groups of 4. East alongside the Stour Estuary to old Harwich for coffee then southish to Walton-on-the-Naze and beach-huts all the way to Frinton, then Clacton. Friday 19 August: Full moon ride. 30 miles east through Greenwich, Woolwich and to Erith and back to catch the full moon. If you've never been east of Greenwich, then enjoy a warm, summer's night ride along the river in this very interesting part of London. Saturday 20 August: Bognor Regis and Chichester Loop. An all day road ride looping from Bognor though Selsey Bill, a ferry across Chichester Channel heading north to the South Downs then south back towards Chichester and Bognor.(Lewisham Cyclists.)
Sunday 21 August: Brightlingsea Explore. Meet 9am Southwark Needle or 9.15am Liverpool Street for the 9.30am train to Manningtree. Brightlingsea is a unique and isolated little seaside estuary village, Essex's only Cinque port and the only one north of the Thames. There's only one road in. Friday 26 - Tuesday 30 August: Wild Wales Weekend. Greenwich Cyclists have provisionally booked all the places at the Bala Backpackers to do the Wild Wales Challenge and will be organising transport there. Book your own place on the ride, but say your with Greenwich Cyclists. The cost for the four nights and the travel there and back will be around £75 per person. Saturday 29 October: Rochester/Maidstone. Meet 10:00 at Cutty Sark Gardens. Distance: May put in 50 ish+ miles by the end of the day if
you hang on to the end. We will follow the Thames Path to Erith, then a short section of
main road to Dartford crossing, then mainly minor roads
following sustrans route to Rochesther. If desire,time and
energy permit head off to the Abbey (can't remember the name
but a highlight for the ride) for tea and finish at
Maidstone to take the train back to London.
Lunch - Probably in Gravesend, hopefully the restaurant on
the river is open, if not will have to find an alternative.
Tea stops - Woolwich Arsenal, Rochester and the abbey.
Bail out points - Erith, Dartford, Gravesend, Rochester and
of course finally Maidstone. All these points have easy
access back to London.
Bikes - suitable for most types of bikes, please note there
are some sections where the route goes on hard packed dirt
surface so if you have a fancy racer which only loves the

Sunday October 30: Crossness Beam Engines. An easy-going ride to see one of the world's largest steam-driven beam engines at work, in its lovingly restored Victorian ironwork frame. About 8 miles one-way, mostly on Thames Path, £5 entry to Crossness, take your own refreshments or visit tea shop.

Saturday 11 November: The Hoo peninsula. We've not
been there since July....meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quickish 25 miles
to Gravesend and coffee there. Then a gentle 20 mile explore starting with the
lovely Shorne Marshes, lunch on the lonely Hoo peninsula. Then quick ride back
to London. Around 75 miles in all. Train option: get the train there or back or
both or neither... the Charing Cross (9.52am) train, Waterloo East (9.54am),
London Bridge (9.59) and Greenwich (10.07am) gets to Gravesend at 10.44am. I'll

Saturday 26 November: Richmond – Commons and Parks.
Head down the Waterlink Way and then turn right towards Tooting, meadering on minor streets to enter Wimbledon Common at the Southern end. Throught the Common into Richmond Park. Lunch in Richmond. Back via the Thames and Sustrans Route 4. 40-50 miles at a steady pace. Meet Southwark Needle, south side of London Bridge at 09:30 or Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich at 10:00. Saturday 3 December: Epping Forest. We'll take the most direct route we can to Epping Forest. Via Stratford its about 6 miles from Greenwich. This is an off road ride. You'll need some tyres with knobbles. Once we get to the Southern edge of the forest we'll get refreshments at one of the cheap teas shacks at Whips Cross then it's into the forest and we'll make the route up as we go. Maybe we'll visit Queen Elizabeth 1's Hunting Lodge this time. Bring lights for the return journey. Approx 35 miles. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens at 10am. (Ian 07986 872 205.)
Sunday 4 December: Beckenham Place Park. A ride that runs the length of Lewisham, the end to end, north to south, Greenwich to Sydenham. An easy going ride that utilises the Waterlink Way. It should be an opportunity to survey our major Sustrans route ahead of the AGM. The destination is Beckenham Place, a beautifully wooded park with the river Ravensbourne running along its northern edge. Ride the banks of the river, the woodland paths and have tea and cakes in the clubhouse café. The ride is short and will probably be over before it gets dark, but bring lights just in case.
