Sunday 8 January: Crystal Palace Meet - Cutty Sark Gardens 10 am Route: Head out the Waterlinks Way to Crystal Palace. Easy Ride to start the new year. Ride about Crystal Palace, early lunch or tea break at the restaurant at the South west side of the park. Possibly extend the ride, depending on weather and inclination. 20 miles Ray 07932189328

Saturday 14 January: Locks Docks. Meet 9am Southwark Needle and 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. That always different slow explore down river, over the Woolwich ferry and round docklands. Saturday 21 January: Dulwich Greendale/Peckham Cricket Bats. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens and 10am Southwark Needle. To London Cycling Campaign's Best Cycling Facility of 2005. Then to Peckham Rye and the old bat factory and other hidden marvels that the tram may demolish. A chance to make up your own mind with the Peckham Society. A slow 10 miles or so. Sunday 22 January: The Putney/Woolwich ferry. We first did this in Bike Week 2005. Great chance to explore London's riverside, slowly hugging every cyclable inch (well almost) in an west-east-west 8 shape. Met 9am Cutty Sark Gardens. 10am Southwark Needle. North over Westminster Bridge. West to Putney and over. East to Tower Bridge and over. East to Woolwich Ferry and over. West back to start. That's 45 miles if you stay all day so the pace will be steady. (Barry 07905 889 005.)

Friday 27 January: Critical Mass. Meet at the National Film Theatre under Waterloo Bridge for a slow meander around Central London. (Bit political.)

Saturday 28 January: Rochester and Maidstone Loop. Ride along Route 1 east from Rochester, along the Medway, then dip south to Leeds Castle, west along Pilgrims Way towards Maidstone and then North by the Medway back to Rochester. 45 miles. Sunday 29 January: Off Road. Oxleas Wood. A rumble in the jungle - we'll take the most direct route to Oxleas Woods for a thorough off road explore which will take in the adjacent Eltham Common. Either cruise around the woods or find challenging jumps, hops and fast downhills. Refreshments available at the café in Oxleas Woods. February 2006

Saturday 4 February: Brentford Loop. An all day ride heading off north through the Isle of Dogs and joining the Grand Union Canal. We ride the canal tow path to West London and then head south back to the River Thames. From here it's roads all the way back to Lewisham. There are many suitable jumping off points with train and tube stations for anyone that doesn't want to do the whole ride.A flat ride with long sections of tow path which are unsuitable for racey road bikes. Also the tow path going west isn't as smooth as the River Lee path; expect a muddy section of 2 or 3 miles. 50 miles total. Meet 10:00 Cutty Sark Gardens. (Ian 07896 872 205.)

Sunday 5 February: East along the Thames. Meet 9am Southwark Needle and 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. We'll go as far as we get down the Thames path and turn round to get home around 5pm. An easy 30 miles or so. (Barry 07905 889 005.)

Saturday 11 February: Pollards Hill Cyclists are a newish group and today's their Luv Yr Bike Day. Lots of activities for everybody. We'll drop in. Meet 9am Southwark Needle and 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. About 20 miles. (Barry 07905 889 005.)

Sunday 12 February: Headcorn Loop. An easy paced ride through this flat area formed by the tributaries of the River Medway, the River Beult and River Teisse, passing many oast houses and fruit orchards. Meet 09:15 London Bridge Station for the 09:32 train to Headcorn. 35 miles. (Lewisham Cyclists: Ian 07986 872 205)

Saturday 18 February: Richmond. Ride to Richmond and back following established cycle routes, including a couple of small loops to interesting places in Richmond. Café lunch. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens at 10am. (Craig 07881 883 472)

Sunday 19 February: Towpaths Canals and a Lake. Cycle through the Isle of Dogs to Limehouse Cut, River Lea and Regents Canal for a tea stop in Victoria Park. Then through Camden to Regents park for lunch. During the afternoon, the ride will go through Hyde Park, to Trafalgar Square, over the river, back over Tower Bridge to St Katherine's Dock. Thursday 23 February: Afterworker: Radical history of biking at 56a. Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle for a very slow ride to 56A Info Shop, (56 Crampton Street, SE17 3AE) for a South London Radical History Group evening. Saturday 4 March: Barcombe. To Barcombe Village Hall for a look at the murals recently featured on Ian Hislop's TV programme on World War 1. The ride follows part of our evolving route to Brighton and takes in Ardingley Reservoir, returning via the Worth Way to Three Bridges and then Gatwick where there are fast and frequent trains back to London. Saturday 11th March: Essex and the Dengie Marshes. Meet 8am sharp Southwark Needle or at Liverpool Street station 8.15am for the 8.34am Southend train. Change at Shenfield for Southminster. Sunday 12 March: Mast Pond Wharf. Meet 9am Southwark Needle, then 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the river ride to coffee at Woolwich Arsenal. We'll stop at Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park en route. Then 12 noon meet on the Woolwich Ferry carpark for group photo by the News Shopper. Lunch in Woolwich and free ferry ride after for the north route back to Island Gardens and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. (Via the excellent and quirky new Farraday display at Trinity Buoy Wharf). Saturday 18 March: Canterbury Loop via Dover. A trip through Kentish fields starting at historic Canterbury winding through small country lanes for an early pub lunch, afternoon tea in Dover. A steep but rewarding climb out of Dover and back to Canterbury. 50 miles. Bring lights and wet weather gear. Meet at Charing Cross station at 08:30am for 9:00am train. (Craig 07881 883 472.)

Sunday 19 March: TimeBank Family Ride. Waterlink Way from Ladywell (no main roads, mostly green and riverbank routes) to Beckenham Place Park. We will stop for rest and tea, then on to Forster Park where we will have a picnic. Kids (and adults!) can have a go on the BMX track. Please bring helmets if you have them. Saturday 25 March: Headcorn 2. Another rolling looping ride through the lowlands of the Weald. Starting and finishing at Headcorn its quiet country lanes through the villages of Smarden, Pluckley, Bethersden, Woodchurch, Tenterden, Sissinghurst and Frittenden. Pub lunch. This ride is entirely on roads and suitable for all bikes. Meet 08:40 London Bridge Station for the 09:07 train to Headcorn which should arrive at 10:01 map. Distance: 35 miles (Ian 07986 872 205.)

Sunday 26 March: Mayor's Charity Bike Ride Greenwich to Erith. Cutty Sark Gardens then 12 miles east down the Thames to Erith. Free refreshments at end. Train or ride back. £5 entry fee. Sponsored ride. Proceeds to Mayor's Motor Neurone Disease and Age Concern charities. Mayor Dr Paul Tyler suffers from MND.
The eastbound route will go straight through the Royal Naval Hospital site (with one-off permission, the new bike route through is still a year away). Also through the Westminster Industrial estate just east of the Flood Barrier - specially opened gate (that's open weekdays not weekends - bike route through there a faroff dream) And along the Thames through Mast Pond Quay just west of Woolwich Ferry....that path has been closed for 2 years whilst Lancsville built their salmon-panelled towers but will be open for the ride, and then closed again. The final destination is Erith. Either ride back or get a train.
The ride is being organised by volunteer Maureen Johnson for the Mayor's office. Entry forms etc from Maureen on 020 8305 0343.
Greenwich Cyclists are helping on the day. It's a big family ride that deserves support.

April 2006

Saturday 1 April: Brighton. This is a finessed version of the "Brighton for Smoothies" road-ride we did to Brighton last September but with a slight change to take us onto quieter paths. Short section of very mild off-road which may make it unsuitable for full on racing bikes although I will be doing it on a fast city bike with relatively narrow tyres. The route takes us over the steep Ditchling Beacon just before Brighton although we will wait for everyone. Train back from Brighton. (Paul 07957 209 322)

Satuday 8 April: Waltham Abbey. A ride up the river Lea towpath to Waltham Abbey. Almost completely flat, and almost all off road. 35 - 40 miles. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens at 10am. (Ray 07963 349993.)

Sunday 9 April: Hoo Peninsula. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quickish 25 miles on some big roads to Gravesend and coffee. Then relax into a 20 slower miles rural explore starting with the Shorne Marshes. Lunch. Then quickish ride back to London again. About 75 miles in all. Train option: get the train there or back or neither. Train to Gravesend from Charing Cross (9.56am), London Bridge (10.04am), New Cross (10.10am) arrives Gravesend 10.49am. (Careful: no Greenwich to Gravesend trains this Sunday. Bus to New Cross). I'll meet the train in Gravesend and gather all together for coffee then Hoo. Please phone me from the train. 12 April – 18 April: Normandy. 60 miles a day cycling from St Malo to Caen. Depart Midday 12 April for a train to Portsmouth, and then the overnight ferry to St Malo. The route will follow the coastline. Option to camp or stay at B&B's. Return 18 April 09:00 ferry from Caen.

Friday 14 April: Herne Hill Velodrome Good Friday Meeting. Watching the track races and lazing about. Infectious excitement and some baffling events too. Some world class races and some scuzzy courier ones. Some of us will take turn helping on the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome stand to recruit more. It's a big day of a slightly different bike culture, and shouldn't be missed. £12 to get in. Doors open 11am. Herne Hill Velodrome. Sunday 16 April: Thames Path Adventure. Reading to London. A slowish explore along as much of the riverside as possible 70 miles along the Thames Path. A circular route starting at Ashford going south through Tenterden to Rye (lunch in a pub or fish and chips), skirting Romney Marshes and north through Appledore and back to Ashford. 50 miles. May 2006

Monday 1 May: Gravesend Circular. Following LCN routes to Bexley (mostly traffic free or quiet streets) then on country lanes through Wilmington, Darenth and Betsham, including a viewing by special arrangement of the 10th century church at Darenth. Lunch in Gravesend and a visit to the grave of Pocahontas. 23 miles outwards; return via Dartford / Thames Path (25 miles) or by train. Suitable for most bikes: one muddy stretch of byway which could be bypassed if necessary. Meet CSG for 10.00am prompt departure. (Stephen 07914 763798)

Sunday 7 May: Locks, docks etc. Meet 9am Southwark Needle or 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. All day always different tour of docklands. Down the Thames path, over the Woolwich Ferry, and beyond. Stay all day and do around 35 very flat exploring miles. Or drop out whenever. (Barry 07905 889 005.)

Saturday 13 May: Wheels over the Weald. From Tonbridge along the south of the Rivers Medway and Beult, over the Weald towards Ashford and returning to Tonbridge to the north of these rivers. A fairly flat ride that will hopefully coincide with the many orchards in this area being in full blossom. The east west east route is never far from the Tonbridge to Ashford railway line so there are many oportunities to cut the ride short and jump on a train home. A rolling ride with nothing over 200 feet. This ride is entirely on roads and should be suitable for all bikes. We'll find a pub for lunch. Sunday 14 May: "Roman Gates" of London ride. Explore the original limits of Londinium - Ealgate(now Aldgate), Moregate (now Moorgate), Bishopsgate, Cripplegate, Newgate, Ludgate, Aeldersgate (now Aldersgate). Although by 1771 all the original gates had disappeared the sites are marked today with statues of Griffins. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens 10:00am. Distance = 30 miles. (Craig 07 881 883 472)

Sunday 21 May: Lee Valley. A ride up and down the Lee Valley as far as navigable Hertford and then return, also by the canal. Dinner at a pub in Hertford. Anyone wanting to cut the ride short can return from Hertford to central London on the train.A medium paced ride suitable for mountain, hybrid and tourers with the will. Lots of tow path. 65 miles. Saturday 27 May: Sevenoaks. A ride over the North Downs to Sevenoaks. Simple picnic lunch planned in a large park - bring your food with you or we'll find a handy supermarket to pick up supplies. If wet, we'll find a pub. Additional social/beer refueling planned at a pub on the way back. A bit of gradual climbing on the way there, one steep hill on the way back. Suitable for any bike. Start building your stamina for the (flat) Dunwich Dynamo now. Opportunity to take train back at Sevenoaks if you don't want to do the full day. June 2006

Saturday 3 June: Isle of Sheppey. This ride begins at Rochester following route 1 along the estuary and then loops around the Isle of Sheppey before returning to Rochester. Dinner will probably be somwhere in Sheerness. Anyone wanting to do only half the ride will be able to get a train back from Sheerness on Sheppey. The ride will be medium paced and will include sections of Sustrans Route 1 which should make it suitable for most bikes except racey road bikes. Meet: Lewisham Station map ticket office at 08:40 for the 09:09 train to Rochester which should arrive at 10:01. If you want to come on the ride and start from London Bridge map the same train leaves London Bridge at 09:00. 60ish miles. (Ian 07986 872 205).

Saturday 10 June: Romney Marshes. This could be another Ashford Loop. The ride begins and ends in Ashford. From Ashford the ride goes south and enters Romney Marsh at Brookland. From Brookland it's south to the coast and Camber. From Camber to Lydd to Dungeness and New Romney. From New Romney back to the coast through St. Mary's Bay, Dymchurch and Hythe. From Hythe returning to Ashford along the top of the ridge above the Royal Military Canal. It's June, there's a lot of coast on this ride so it might be possible to spend some time on the beach. Consider bringing a sandwich and towel. This is an all day ride, medium paced, completely on roads and should be suitable for all bikes. BIKE WEEK. Saturday 17 June: Greenwich Cylcists Information Stall and Bike Check.Come and visit us at Cutty Sark Gardens between 10am and 2pm to obtain information about Greenwich Cylcists and the London Cycling Campaign. We will also check your bicycle and point out anything that needs attention.

BIKE WEEK. Sunday 18 June: Windsor. Lots of riverside views and a trip through the central part of Windsor Great Park which is closed to normal four-wheeled traffic. If people are interested we may make a short stop at the Commonwealth Air Forces memorial which we pass above Runnymede. Pub lunch, probably at Eton Wick to shelter from tourists, and every chance of another pub stop on the way back. A great introduction to the highly recommended Thames Valley London to Oxford National Cycle Route. We'll take a faster alternative route back but if some people want to shorten the day there are several railway stations to hop off at. Since this is a particularly long ride, please bring snacks. Saturday 2 September: Canterbury Loop. Ride up the Crab and Winkle Way to Whitstable and then join the Viking Coastal Trail and ride along the coast through Herne Bay, pass Reculver, go through Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate before turning inland at Sandwich and returning to Canterbury along quiet Kent country Lanes. Sunday 10 September: Lea Valley to Waltham Abbey. Another ride up the Lee Valley before the last of the summer fades, winter descends and the spring brings who knows what from imminent Olympics works. See it in its raw unimproved state while you can, tell your grandchildren: "I remember when this were all ..."

Saturday 16 September: Greenwich to Southend. A medium paced all day ride to Southend. We'll go under the foot tunnel at Greenwich and up through the Isle of Dogs onto the A124 for a speedy direct route to the Essex countryside. Sunday 17 September: Canals, Parks and Lakes. Meet 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens, then up the Isle of Dogs onto the canal, past Victoria Park through Islington to Camden then to Regents Park to Hyde Park back to through the Mall and then to Tower Bridge and the Ornamental Locks. 30ish miles mostly along tow paths and minor roads.

Tuesday 19 September: Afterworker. International Talk Like a Pirate Ride
Its International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and we're going to celebrate it in style. Or walk the plank. You choose.
Meet Houses of Parliament at 6.30pm on Tuesday 19th. Meeting place is Parliament Square beside Brian Haw's demo, ie, diectly opposite entrance to the Houses of Parliament. Route is south over Westminster Bridge, east through County Hall. Along Upper Ground, Southwark Street. Second meeting point 7pm at Evans cycle shop London Bridge (south end of London Bridge). East on Tooley Street, north over Tower Bridge. Quick stop at the Tower and Traitors Gate. St. Katherines Dock, then along the Ornamental Canal to the Pirate Ship Final stop at the Pospect of Whitby, to quaff some fine ales and toast any poor unfortunate wretches in the gibbet on the foreshore. Saturday 23 September: South Downs Mountain Bike Ride. This ride is based on a route taken from the rough ride guide of mountain bike rides in the South East. Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 September: The fabulous Whitstable Weekend. Ride the 60 miles to Whitstable. Stay over. Oyster. Then Dover. Train back Sunday evening. Friday 29th September - Sunday 1st October. Weekend Bike Tour Series 1 Salisbury to Bath. On Friday we'll catch the 19:00 train from London Waterloo to Salisbury. On Saturday we will ride a scenic tour from Salisbury through Salisbury plain past Stonehenge and camp near/close to Bath. On Sunday we will ride a scenic loop around Bath area and return to London in the evening. COST: Train ticket will cost between £30 and £50 depending on discounts available. Saturday 7 October: East Grinstead and Lewes Loop. A ride around Sussex lanes and byways, taking in Lewes and including a possible sighting of a camel. The ride begins with a longish jaunt down the Forest Way traffic-free path. With the days closing in the pace will be relatively high (but by no means killing) in order to ensure that we return to East Grinstead in daylight but bring lights of course. Suitable for any bike except racers. Pub lunch but as there is a possibility that this may be a bit after the half-way point bring snacks to keep you going. Early start to squeeze the last of the summer daylight out but it's a good ride – you can sleep during the winter. Meet New Cross Gate ticket office at 7:45 map – we'll take the 8:10 train, changing at East Croydon. If you want to come straight to East Croydon, get the 8:40 to East Grinstead arriving 9:17. Friday 13th – Sunday 15th Ocotber: Isle of Wight Weekend. Leave Friday night for the Isle of Wight then spend 2 days cycling around the Island. Lovely place, there is a railway grade cycle path. Lots of amazing sights, Carisbrook Castle with the Donkey used to bring water up from the well, Osbourne House which is quite amazing, Roman Ruins. Craig will probably camp but lots of other options. Saturday 14th October: Saffron Walden and Cambridge. The ride leaves Saffron Walden and follows the River Cam into Cambridge before looping back along quiet lanes to Saffron Walden. Saturday 4 November: Feeder Ride to Stop Climate Chaos. As part of the International Day of Climate Action on the Saturday before the Nairobi Climate Talks, Stop Climate Chaos will launch the "I Count" campaign. The main event will be 1pm - 3pm in Trafalgar square, but before that, as part of the rally there will be a bike ride from Lincoln's Inn Fields to the US Embassy to insist that George Bush stops undermining attempts for coordinated international action to avert the imminent global threat of global warming.
The ride gathers at Lincoln's Inn Fields at 10am and will go via the Australian Embassy and Downing Street to the US Embassy by 11.30am followed by the protest concert and rally at noon. We will meet at 8.30am at Woolwich Ferry (south side, Thames Path) and 9am at Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich (departing by 9.15) for a feeder ride.
The main ride organisers suggest that you may wish to bring whistles (for the main protest ride) and to decorate your bike with placards to let the public know why we are riding.

Sunday 5 November: Alexandra Palace. 30ish miles to North London, with a bit of a railway grade that has several layers to it. It's an English Heritage site so free entry to members.

Saturday 11 November: Oxted. A ride determined to scoff at the drawing in of the days with an earlyish start to ensure a manageable pace. Pace medium in order to get back before it goes dark. We'll be doing a tour of Surrey Lanes and parts of the Surrey Cycle Route and thanks to training it to Oxted and back we'll be missing out the climbs of the North Downs. Total distance about 45 miles max with a pub lunch after about 25. Possible short stop just after lunch for farm-made ice-cream. Winter? Pah! Bring lights of course. All on road apart from a very short bit of very mild rough surfacing you could almost walk over so suitable for any bike. Meet New Cross Gate ticket office at 8:50.0 We'll take the 9:10 train and change at East Croydon for a train leaving from there for Oxted at 9:40. Arrive Oxted at 10:00. Saturday 2nd December: Locks Docks and One Steaming Ferry. The Food Chain Edition. Friday 1 December is World Aids Day. The Food Chain is a London charity that provides nutrition services, including home delivered meals, groceries and food etc advice to men, women and children who are very ill as a result of HIV related illness. All their services are provided with the help of volunteers. So today's always different Locks Docks is dedicated to The Food Chain. There's a voluntary donation of at least £10.00 (£5.00) at the starts. Every penny to The Food Chain. Meet 9am Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge..or 10am Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich for an all day sociable explore of docklands with buy your own coffee, lunch and tea stops. Saturday 9th December: Bishops Stortford to Saffron Walden. Join Lewisham Cyclists for this Essex Lanes explore. It's a short hop from Liverpool Street to to Bishops Stortford and only a 37 minute train ride ride which should help to maximise the riding time in the available daylight. Anyone wanting to do some Christmas shopping could leave the ride in the very nice Essex town of Saffron Walden. It's on the same train line as Bishop's Stortford so there are no complications involved with fare adjustments - just get a return to Saffron Walden.The ride loops back to Bishops Stortford from Saffron Walden on quiet roads. Depending on pace this ride could finish in the dark so it is important that you bring lights. Meet 08:30 Liverpool Street Station for the 08:58 train to Bishops Stortford. 38 miles. Sunday 10th December: Ally Pally Seasonal Fair. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens, then Greenwich Foot Tunnel, Isle of Dogs, Limehouse Dock, Regent's Canal towpath eastwards past Victoria Park, Islington, Highbury, Parkland Walk (converted railway track, Highgate, Muswell Hill, lunch at Farmers' Market in Alexandra Palace if weather fine. Back via Tottenham Lock and Lea Valley Pathway. 30-mile round trip, suitable for all bikes but Parkland section a bit rough in places.

Saturday 16th December: Richmond and back. Another early start to grab the daylight. Once we've headed through some suburban sprawl a surprisingly green route. Lunch in Richmond Park, before heading back across Wimbledon, Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Suitable for all bikes new or old but definitely not racers. Mild off road shouldn't cause other bikes any problems. Total distance between 35 and 40 miles but as this is essentially a town ride you can drop out at any time. Pace decidedly moderate. Sunday 17th Descember: Canals, Lakes and Rivers. Starting from Cutty Sark Gardens, ride through Isle of Dogs, to Regents Canal, Islington, Camden, Regents Park, Hyde Park, and The Mall, then over Westminster Bridge and back over Tower Bridge then through the Ornamental Canal, Isle of Dogs and back to Greenwich. 30 miles. Meet Cutty Sark Gardens at 10am.

Saturday 22 December: Rainham Marshes and the new RSPB Visitor Centre. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for slow exploring ride there. About 12 miles. Then lunch and look around. And back along the bike routes of the A13. (Barry. 07905 889 005)
