Notes of Meeting - August 2005


1. Welcome & Introductions
15 cyclists attended, 2 apologies.

2. Minutes of July meeting approved
i.
Derek said the unallocated amount in club funds was £508 after AGM costs.
ii. Derek said he had attended a certificate award ceremony for 25 pupils of Thomas a Beckett school. Head and other teachers pleased with the project, photographs to follow.

3. Rides.
Ray said Lewisham and Southwark websites had a full list of rides including ours. ACTION Julian to seek backup for Andy to ensure rides schedule on Greenwich website is updated in the latter's absence.

4. Cycle Routes
i.
AGREED to renew campaign for right to cycle through Royal Naval College. Members felt that it was illogical for the Greenwich Foundation to allow cars to park there but not for cyclists to transit, and that the whole site is shut at 6pm anyway. ACTION Anthony to raise with Council, and contact Sustrans, Greenwich Foundation and possibly student reps at Trinity College of Music and University of Greenwich.
ii. Regular meeting with Council's lead cycle officer Don Anyiam, 6pm at The Forum, Aug 17. Cyclists welcome.
iii. Anthony read out latest proposed route change for LCN+ Route 65 Lewisham to Bexley from consultants Meyer Brown. From Ha'penny Bridge the route goes Norman Road, right into Tarves Way, Straightsmouth, Stockwell Street and Nevada Street to Greenwich Park.
iv. Lovells Wharf. Barry said the model displayed at a public consultation was hopelessly small. The proposal was for 1,500 dwellings, not much evidence of cycle parking, but a 12-metre wide river frontage.
v. Don Anyiam said in an email work is underway to fix the footpath at Thames Barrier with Cyclists Dismount signs as required by the Environment Agency.
vi. Signs are still the wrong way round at Woolwich Ferry. Anthony to raise at Aug 17 meeting.
vii. London Cycling Campaign asking for feedback on CRIM process. ACTION Julian to reply with input from others.
viii. Close a Road. Green Party initiative asking for sugggestions.Members discussed Greenwich town centre gyratory, but that's a long shot. NO ACTION.

5. Cycle maintenance classes.
Julian said he had people lined up to learn and pay for it. ACTION he will try to find dates at Armada Centre or another venue in August.

6. Ceilidh.
Barry said Southwark Cyclists have agreed to handle all the 2005 ceilidh finances for Greenwich Cyclists - expenditure and receipts - and will pay over to Greenwich Cyclists 90% of the surplus very quickly after the event.

7. Other Business.
i.
Anthony drew attention to the fatal shooting of a cyclist at Woodpecker Road in Deptford at midnight on July 25, allegedly by a gang also on bikes.
ii. Steven said South Eastern Trains should enforce their policy of no bikes at peak hours, preferably by explaining to cyclists in advance.
