Notes of Meeting and AGM - June 2004
Ordinary monthly meeting was held first followed by the AGM
Monthly Meeting
1. Welcome & Introductions
- Councillor Peter Brooks - Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council, was introduced as a fellow cyclist and our chair for the AGM portion of the meeting.
- All others present introduced themselves.
- Apologies from current secretary, Karen Servadei. Karen Marks volunteered to take minutes for today.
- 22 people total in attendance.
2. May minutes
None available at the moment. These will be posted to the website at a later date.
3. Pedal Power
- Julian Dobson proposed changing the publication date of our monthly newsletter to after the meeting in order to include items of interest raised at the meeting. This motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
- The next Pedal Power distribution will be on Tuesday 8 June from 7-9am. Please e-mail Julian Dobson if you are able to assist and show up at Cutty Sark Gardens next Tuesday. Julian will create a new Pedal Power and bring sufficient copies for distribution.
- It was also suggested to distribute Pedal Power at the mid-summer madness ride, though an updated version will need to be created with a more current rides listing.
4. Bike Week 12 - 20th June 2004
- Jason Joyce reported on the events scheduled for Bike Week and mentioned that he received an e-mail from the national co-ordinator commending the work done by Greenwich cyclists.
- 16 rides will be offered by the Greenwich Cyclists. Click here for the latest information.
- Rides are also posted on the LCC rides listing.
- Please print details of the Bike Week rides and distribute to friends, post them at the office and/or local businesses.
- And don't forget the legendary Midsummer Madness ride to celebrate Summer Solstice. We'll be meeting at Cutty Sark Gardens early Monday morning, the 21st of June at 2am.
5.Sutcliffe Park Stall: Saturday 12 June 2004, 11:30 - 3:00
- Hilary Samuels and Julian Dobson will be co-ordinating a Bike Info stall as part of the Park's celebration for the official re-opening of the new wetlands area.
- Please e-mail Hilary Samuels if you are interested in helping out.
6.LCC Borough Group Training Day: Saturday 5 June 2004
- Philip Loy presented information for the LCC Borough Group Training Day on Saturday 5th June, 10.30 to 4.30, at King's College in Waterloo.
- Several workshops will be offered on various topics; How to Organize rides (by Barry Mason, of course!), Promoting your group with the media, and several other topics of general interest to anyone who plays, or would like to play an active role in their borough's cycling group.
- If you are interested in participating, please contact Philip by Saturday morning on 020 7928 6112 or philip@lcc.org.uk.
7. Rides
- New rides are always being added to the website, click here for the latest information.
- If you are interested in putting together and leading a ride, contact the rides organiser (details below) with information and we'll get it on the website.
- As always, all Greenwich Cyclists rides are free (aside from train tickets for out-of-London rides) and anyone is welcome.
- Rides vary in length, distance and difficulty. Please read the details carefully and contact the ride leader if you are unsure if a ride is right for you.
8. Any Other Business
- Be sure to check out the latest LCC magazine where our own Julian Dobson has penned an informative article about cycling in Greenwich. Thanks also to Liz Delap and Richard Marston for their literary and photographic contributions.
- This Saturday's Easy Going Ride, the 3rd annual Sculpture Ride, will tour the many works of outdoor art in and around Canary Wharf. Meet at CSG at 10am, or 10:15 at Island Gardens for the slow-paced tour on the Isle of Dogs.
- Barry will once again lead the famous Locks, Docks and One Smoking Ferry ride on Sunday 6 June. Meet at CSG at 10am and explore London on both sides of the Thames with updated and informative commentary and history lessons.
- And finally, a very big thank you to Hilary Samuels who held the role of co-ordinator over the last year. Even though Hilary is standing down from the lead role, she will remain involved with the group and see to the completion of the schools projects that she initiated last year.
- Thanks was also given to other members who have served the group in one form or another over the last year.
Annual General Meeting
Review of Roles and Responsibilities
- Hilary reviewed the updated "Suggested Responsibilities" sheet and answered any questions that arose.
- It was agreed that the management committee will continue to consist of the 6 elected officers.
Introduction
- Peter Brooks gave thanks again to Hilary and other members who were standing down from their roles.
- Peter also recognised the appearance of Greenwich Cyclists at the January Council meeting (noting that even a few inches of snow couldn't keep our members away) and how this has boosted awareness of cycling issues in the Council.
1. Financial Report: Karen Marks
- Karen went through the GC AGM 2004 Summary Report which covered our finances from 1 June 2003 through 31 May 2004.
- Barry Mason pointed out the excess funds and questioned how these would be spent. Hilary Samuels explained how the money has been allocated for training currently in process and planned for completion by the end of summer for the two schools projects that the grant funds were awarded to.
- It was proposed to move the start of the financial year to April instead of June to align our group with normal business practices. This motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
2. Year in Review: Hilary Samuels
- Hilary reported on the accomplishments of Greenwich Cyclists over the last year. A full report is listed in the early June issue of Pedal Power which has been posted here .
- Highlights include;
- our ever-impressive rides program that covers all ages and abilities, from day-trips to weekends away
- free training classes for adults and children who are beginners or nervous about cycling
- the popular maintenance courses which help dissolve the mysteries of bike repair and save you money
- GC's increased visibility in the press and our ongoing newsletter and website to keep the community aware and informed about cycling in and around Greenwich
- Improved communication and contacts with Greenwich Council about planning issues
- the Schools projects, where over £30,000 in grant money was awarded and is being spent to teach and encourage school children to cycle safely and enjoyably.
- Regular social events such as track days at Herne Hill Velodrome, our annual Christmas Ceilidh and involvement in various Bike Stalls and Dr. Bike sessions.
- Hilary concluded by thanking everyone in the group for all the work they have done over the past year and noted that we all help contribute to the ongoing success of Greenwich Cyclists.
3. Elections for 2004/5
- Nominations were accepted by people wishing to serve or those nominating others. All nominations were seconded and approved unanimously.

Peter Brooks fielded questions from the group for several minutes responding to various questions, complaints and information queries from the group.
Meeting concluded at 8:35pm. A delicious buffet and drinks were provided for socialising.
