Beat the charge- Learn to ride!

A scheme to help commuters avoid the congestion charge is among the exciting range of activities on offer during the International Women’s Festival in March.

The Greenwich Cyclists’ cycle-buddy scheme, providing one-to-one support to would-be cycle commuters, has been developed to turn novices into confident cyclists.

Coupled with the cycle training for beginners, provided by professional instructors, and a series of ‘Easy Going’ rides, it amounts to a comprehensive programme to get more people on their bikes.

The programme includes:

All activities in the programme are FREE and open to both men and women.

Liz Delap, of Greenwich Cyclists, explains: "Cycling is fantastic exercise, it’s great fun and, of course, cyclists don’t have to pay the congestion charge . We aim to help anybody

interested in learning to cycle or brushing up their bike skills to do so. Our activities are
designed to suit all ages and abilities – they’re open to everyone".

Learning to ride at the Absolute Beginners Classes will be easy with our experienced trainer, supported by volunteers. We can even lend you a bike! To pre-book the classes, or to borrow a bike, contact Hilary on 07929 722 973. The classes run 10.30-12.30am or 2-4 pm. Meet us on Thames Path at back of Waterfront Leisure Centre, Woolwich.

Improve your cycle skills, or just enjoy a fun day out at the Easy Going Rides. There’s a choice of 5 rides on Sunday 9th, Saturday 16th, Sunday 17th, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd March, from a gentle few miles along the river, to shopping trips and building up to our legendary Locks, Docks and one Smoking Ferry ride. See the back of this flyer for more details.

As for the Buddy Scheme, would-be commuters contacting us can expect help planning their route with the aid of route maps. We’ll also cycle the route with you, so you can concentrate on enjoying the ride and gain confidence!

Further rumours of foot tunnel closure

So you heard it here first …..again! Last summer we reported the Greenwich foot tunnel was to be closed overnight, for a few weeks, whilst much needed repair work was carried out. There’s been no sign of the work yet, but contractors have been spotted assessing the scene…. The guys in the lift think work will start soon. There’ll be signs in the tunnel to give advance notice. Just remember where you heard it first!
