"Bikes on trains should be the norm"

…..said Clive Efford MP (Labour, Eltham) in his helpful closing words to Greenwich Council's first ever Public Transport Conference on Saturday 15 March. Connex heard that very clearly, as did the DLR, Crossrail and London Buses.

Greenwich Cyclists had a useful stall there at Woolwich Arsenals’ Firepower museum.

We'll have worked magic if we ever get Clive on a bike, and Firepower might just install bike racks one day as their planning permission says they must.

Bikes on all sorts of public transport will be easy. …one day! We'll just keep doing our bit to help.

Women’s Festival – A Winner!
Greenwich Cyclists hosted a whole range of events for the International Women’s Festival – aimed to get women – and men, on their bikes! The events kicked off with Absolute Beginners sessions, on Saturday 8th March. A picture of this event in the Mercury newspaper gave us great publicity for the 5 easy going rides planned during March.

One of these rides got a group of animal loving cyclists to Surrey Docks Farm. The star attraction was definitely the two kid goats who were just a few days old. They loved the fuss and attention deciding that shoelaces were far tastier than hay - although they didn’t rule out the carrots some of us had brought along!

The biggest ever easy-going ride was the Thames path between Woolwich and Greenwich. A whopping 16 people turned out, mostly first time riders with Greenwich Cyclists. Judging by their comments it won’t be their last. The assorted group included a family of four on a long tandem trailer – proving the whole family can get cycling together!

Want to cycle with us but haven’t got a bike?
Greenwich Cyclists have recently bought two bikes for lending out to people. We have one large child’s / small adult’s bike and a small framed ladies bike. If you would like to borrow them for a ride please contact Hilary on 020 8769 4661 / 07929 722 973 giving at least two day’s notice.

Cycle Greenwich Park
Greenwich Cyclists are now in discussion with the Royal Parks Police about more cycle routes in the park. We need to know what you'd like.

The roads to the east and west of the Park now have 20mph speed limits, that makes the 30mph limit in the Park itself look even sillier. We're onto that too. ..And the planned merger of the RPP and the Met edges forward.

Easy going rides
We run easy going rides on the first Saturday of every month. They are slow, flat rides, off-road, and suitable for beginners and families, but all welcome. If you would like to join us, come along to Cutty Sark Gardens, 10am on the following dates:
Sat 5th April - The Monument. Gentle ride to the City. Optional climb of the monument. Hilary 07929 722 973.
