January 2003

Saturday 4 January: Easygoing Ride. Meet 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens for the gentle 3 mile ride along the Thames path to the Flood Barrier. Coffee etc there. This ride is designed for beginners and families, but all are welcomed as ever. 07905 889 005 for details.

Sunday 5 January: Surrey Quiet Lanes. 40 miles-ish. 9am prompt by the Peckham Pulse, (under the big awning), on Peckham High Street opposite the end of Rye Lane, SE15 or 9.30 at Waterloo for the 9.45 train to Milford. Saturday 18 January: Rail engineering works plus a hastily convened Save Herne Hill velodrome meeting means we've had to cancel the Cliffe ride scheduled for today. Sorry. Our first ever cancellation. But the velodrome meeting is very important and we need to support it. Meet 11am Cutty Sark Gardens for a slow meander there via lunch in Dulwich Park and London Recumbents. The meeting starts at the Burbage Road velodrome at 2pm and runs till around 4pm.

Sunday 19 January: Thamesmead/Beckton link. 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for riverside ride to Thamesmead, then via the ferry to Beckton. Let's see where this possible new bridge might go. Then the Greenway. Then discuss it on 5 February. A 30 mile gentle all day explore. Barry. 07905 889 005.

Saturday 1 February: Dungeness! Meet 9am CSG or 10am London Bridge mainline station for train to Folkstone and the sea, Romney Marshes and the wonderful Dungeness shingle banks. Bring a swimmie (optional!). Train back from Rye, or big hill Hastings. About 60 miles in all. Barry 07905 889 005.

Saturday 1 February:  Easy ride to the Horniman museum. Meet 10.00am at CSG for 5 mile ride through quiet streets to Horniman museum for natural history, african or newly re-opened music galleries.  Hands-on family activities with musical instruments or toys.

Sunday 9 February: Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry: Meet 10am CSG. It's back. The ever-changing 30 mile tour of docklands. Drop out half way, or stay all day.

Sunday 16 February: Eltham Palace. We've kept meaning to. Meet 10am CSG for a meander to the palace and a good look round it. £6 entry fee. All day with lunch at the Oxleas Wood cafe. Barry. 07905 889 005.

Saturday 22 February: Barnes Wetlands Centre.10am CSG. Gently down the Thames Path to Barnes and the very impressive Wetlands Centre and its overwintering birds. Entry fee. Ride or train back. 15 mils there.

We'll ride around the Dome Peninsula along the Thames Path to Greenwich, spend time exploring the Greenwich shops & market before cycling back to Woolwich. 5 gentle miles each way. Sunday 16 March: Sustrans Ranger Ride: on Sustrans behalf, Greenwich Cyclists look after the Thames Path from Greenwich's western border (Watergate Street) all the way east down to Dartford Bridge in Kent 16 miles. We keep the signs up to date, watch for hazards and encroaching vegetation, and liaise with local landowners, Sustrans and others to ensure that the route is as good as possible. So we now ride the route regularly. On the third Sunday of each month, like this one, we meet at 10am at the Woolwich Flood Barrier and ride east to Erith and Dartford checking as we go. Sunday 23 March: International Women's Festival Event (men very welcome too). Our legendary Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry ride. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for gentle much stopping tour of Docklands. We'll catch the Woolwich ferry, stop for coffee and lunch. Half-day/all day 5-30 mile options. Saturday 29 March: Cliffe and the Hoo peninsula. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for quickish 20 mile ride to Gravesend. Sunday 13 April: ooops...it's London Marathon day. We'd better not after all meet at Cutty Sark Gardens to do the Locks, Docks and 30,000 steaming joggers ride. Sunday 20 Easter: Easter Day Wandle Explore: Meet at Brockley station at 9.50am for the 10.06 train to West Croydon for a slow 13 mile ride down the river Wandle to where it meets the Thames in Wandsworth. Saturday 26 April: Whitstable. Meet at 9am (yes, 9am) Cutty Sark Gardens. 55 miles through very varied scenery. Some big roads out of London. A gentle exploring Thames-side ride through London's fascinating hugely changing and multi-facetted Docklands. Led by a local. Coffee, lunch and interest stops. About 30 miles. Sunday 18 May: Two canals/Three Mills. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. North to Limehouse Basin and Bow Back Rivers for a Lee delta explore. At 12 noon Three Mills opens specially for us with a guided tour. £3 each. A huge handsome 1776 tidal mill that's steadily being restored. Picnic lunch in their secret garden. Saturday 24 May: Hoo Peninsula Revisited. Get the 10.07am train from Greenwich to Gravesend. Arrives 10.44am. (Or meet me 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quickish 25 mile big-road-ride to Gravesend). Then all meet outside Gravesend station at 11am for a slowish 25 mile on-road explore of the rural/marshy/mysterious Hoo peninsula. Train (or ride!) back from Gravesend around 5pm. Saturday 31 May: Herne Hill Velodrome: we've taken it over for our exclusive use again. Borrow one of their track bikes and ride the banked concrete. No cars, no traffic lights, no potholes, no junctions, no motorbikes or pedestrians.....no brakes, no gears, no back-peddling. Huge fun, a different sort of biking. This pro-trained session qualifies you to use the track. It takes most people, and children from 8 up, about 10 minutes to get the hang of it. Saturday 12 July: the legend goes on. Dunwich Dynamo. Number eleven. Not a Greenwich ride as such. There's no formal entry procedure and it's free. It's an unsupported overnight ride to Dunwich Beach in Suffolk along, once out of Londo n, surprisingly deserted lanes. 120 miles. Coach back tickets on sale now. See FAQs. Monday 18 August: Cycle Obstacle Course for 8-12 year olds. A fun way for children to improve their cycling skills with professional trainers.  2-4pm Ocean Park, West Street, Erith (by the youth & family centre).  Children must have their own bike and helmet.  Contact Frances on 01322 441 979 to book.

Friday 22 August-Tuesday 26 August: The Wild Wales Weekend. We had a great time last year. The weekend is centred around the 500 rider Wild Wales Challenge. It's a circular 80 mile jaunt starting and finishing at Bala in the very big hills of Snowdownia. Finishing is a huge kick, but it's very easy to do just some of it. We do much easier rides on the other days and will, for example, get the lovely steam railway to the coast one day. We've blocked booked a hotel in central Bala. oin us for the hole long weekend, or just some. Sunday 31 August: Lewisham ride to join Richmond -Windsor Bike Events ride. We'll start from Lewisham and ride to Richmond for the start together. There's an entry fee (£10) and don't forget the train fare home (back to Waterloo). Thursday 18 September is Bike Day: Meet 7am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quiet roads ride up to Broadgate for a free TfL breakfast, then on for more at Covent Garden. It is part of "Way to go" during 16th-22nd September 03,a travel awareness week promoting sustainable travel options. The aim of the week is to encourage Londoners to think about the way they travel around the Capital and how their travel choices affect the environment. A variety of sustainable transport alternatives will be showcased to provide a full compliment of travel options for journeys to work, school or for leisure. Saturday 4 October: Herne Hill Velodrome. The afternoon takeover by Greenwich Cyclists has morphed into an Open Afternoon with the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome. 1-4pm. There'll be a chance to borrow a track bike and ride the track. With full training for those who haven't ridden it before. £5 covers those costs. There'll also be lots of information about plans to save and modernise the velodrome. This is the perfect opportunity to see and use the place, and get more involved if you want to. Saturday 13 December: Party Time! Ceilidh! Our first ceilidh last year was wonderful, the dance floor was packed. This year's will be even better. We're limiting tickets to 180.
