January 2002

Wednesday 2 January: monthly meeting. All very welcome. 7.30-9pm. The Forum@Greenwich, 177 Trafalgar Road, London SE10. Pub after.

Saturday 5th January: 1000hrs at Cutty Sark Gardens. Join us for a wander round Docklands on the Locks & Docks ride. This will be your last chance to use Tower Bridge with Greenwich Cyclists for a few weeks, so make the most of it! Pub lunch at the half-way mark with the option to leave at lunchtime, via
the Greenwich foot tunnel. A flat, reasonably quiet ride. Suitable for all.

Sunday 6 January: Herne Hill velodrome 1-4pm. Borrow a track bike and get taught how to ride it. Open to all. £10 or less. Meet 11am Cutty Sark for slow ride there.

Saturday 12 January: Essex Rivers Ride: meet 9am Cutty Sark or 10am Liverpool Street Station for the Manningtree train and a flat circular 40 miles via Ipswich and Harwich.

Sunday 13 January: 10am Cutty Sark: the 10/20/30 mile Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry ride.

Wednesday 16 January: meet Cutty Sark and then go see Last Orders (Bermondsey, Blackheath, Rochester, Chatham, Margate)

Saturday 19 January: 10am Cutty Sark: the Beckton Greenway ride. A 20 mile circle, almost all off roads on paved bike tracks.

Sunday 20 January: 10am Cutty Sark and 20 miles to Kew Garden’s place in the country: Wakehurst Place. Admission fee. But worth it. Train or ride back.

Friday 25 January: central London Critical Mass. 6pm National Film Theatre, South Bank. (Bit political).

Saturday 26th January: 0900hrs, Cutty Sark Gardens to Leeds Castle, Kent
40 miles (approx).
Some of us are going to the excellent Hackney Cyclists' Burns Night party. 6.30-11pm, St Thomas Abney School, Fairholt Road, N16.

Sunday 27 January: 10am Cutty Sark: The Culture Ride. Gentle London explore with some visits thrown in. 20 gentle miles.

February 2002

Saturday 2 February: Richmond park. 10am, Cutty Sark Gardens. 11am, National Film Theatre, Waterloo. 40+ very flat miles, except for three short sharp hills in or close to Richmond Park.

Sunday 3 February: Sevenoaks. 10am, Cutty Sark Gardens. 10.45am, Lewisham Station. We'll take the 11.05am train from Lewisham direct to Sevenoaks (40 mins) where we'll do a 35 mile circular route. Those with Railcards, please bring them.

Monday 4 February: 7pm: London Cycling Campaign Borough Coordinators meeting.

Wednesday 13 February: De Laune Cycling Club visit. to see their clubhouse, ride their rollers etc...meet 6pm at Cutty Sark for ride there. Or there at 7pm: 93 Choumert Road.

Saturday 16 February: 10am Cutty Sark: Gravesend and ferry over. Flat 50 mile circle.

Sunday 17 February: 9.15am London Bridge station by Smiths: coastal ride, Deal to Folkstone. 20 undulating miles of wonderful coastal scenery. We get the 9.37 to Ramsgate, change of plan - engineering works.

Friday 22 February: Central London Critical Mass. 6pm outside National Film Theatre/National Theatre, South Bank. (Bit political).

Saturday 23 February: 10am Cutty Sark: Locks, Docks and that smoking ferry: docklands explore 10-30 miles. Stay all day, or drop out before/after lunch.

Sunday 24 February: 10am Cutty Sark Gardens: Leeds Castle, MkII. We'll have another go and hopefully the weather and turnout will be better! 40 miles with a few hills to Leeds Castle in Kent. A bit roady for the first 15 miles so not suitable for children. Train home from Bearsted station. Admission fee to the castle and grounds if anyone wants a look.

March 2002

Saturday 2 March: 9am Cutty Sark or 10am Liverpool Street station for 40 mile Essex estuary tour.

Sunday 3 March: 10am: East London Greenway ride. 20 miles on paved surfaces but nearly all off road.

Saturday 9 March: 10am-1pm or 2-5pm: The Absolute Beginners Ride. Professional training for non-riders. Bring a bike, or we may be able to lend you one. Meet outside the Waterfront Leisure Centre, Woolwich. This special event is part of the Greenwich International Women's Festival.

Saturday 9 March: 10am, Cutty Sark Gardens: Chislehurst Caves. A repeat
of last year's ride to Chislehurst Caves and a tour around the caves themselves. 20 mile round trip, some of which may be through the woods, depending on the weather. All roads, if it's mucky. As many quiet roads as possible! Admission fee of about a fiver to the caves and lunch in the caves' cafe.

Sunday 10 March: 10am Cutty Sark: a few miles to the Woolwich Flood Barrier and back. Ideal for beginners. This special event is part of the Greenwich International Women's Festival.

Sunday 10th March: 9am, Cutty Sark Gardens: 50ish reasonably flat miles along the Thames to Windsor. Plenty of drop out points and train back to Waterloo.

Saturday 16 March: 10am Cutty Sark: Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry: 10, 20 or 30 miles round docklands. This special event is part of the Greenwich International Women's Festival.

Saturday 16 March: 9am, Cutty Sark Gardens: Let's go to Brighton! 56 reasonably hilly miles to Brighton. Lunch at the Dog and Duck in Outwood and another chance to climb those famous Turners Hill and Ditchling Beacon. ** PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A 9AM START!

Sunday 17 March: 10am Cutty Sark: the Waterlink Way Sustrans route 21 to Gatwick. 30 miles. Train back.

Tuesday 19 March: Afterworker: 7pm Cutty Sark. Short, sociable ride. This special event is part of the Greenwich International Women's Festival.

Saturday 23 March: 10am Cutty Sark: slow explore up to the South Bank along the Thames Path.This special event is part of the Greenwich International Women's Festival.

Good Friday 29 March: meet 11am Cutty Sark and ride to Herne Hill velodrome for a spectator afternoon of pro-track racing. About £5 to get in. We'll drop by London Recumbents on the way there.   (Then, for afficionados, 6pm National Film Theatre for Critical Mass..bit political).

Sunday 31 March: Suffolk little ferries and a long-boat. The local ferries open this weekend. Fab. So meet Cutty Sark 9am sharp and ride to Liverpool Street station for the 10.10am to Manningtree. Then east to lovely old Harwich, ferry to Felixstowe and up to Sutton Ho where the National Trust have just opened a much-praised exhibition about the 640AD (?) Viking long-ship burial there. Admission fee. A gentle 40 miles in voluptuous Suffolk. This is a new explore and I don't want to rush back and waste any of the wonderful sunshine. So back at Liverpool Street by 7pm. But drop out where you like.

April 2002

Monday 1 April: Locks, Docks etc. 10am Cutty Sark...but this time we'll explore Canary Wharf more. There's loads happening there. All day docklands explore. 10, 20 or 30 miles options.

We've taken it over for 3 hours...borrow a track bike, get trained and try the banking. Collection to cover costs...about £10. If you enjoy it, you'll then be able to join summer Tuesday evening sessions.

Sunday 5 May: The Crab and Winkle line. Help celebrate the 172nd birthday of the world's first steam passenger railway, between Canterbury and Whitstable. Opened on 3 May 1830. There's an free afternoon party at the Winding Pond, half way along the 8 mile route. Now a Sustrans path. 9.05am train from Victoria gets in at Sittingbourne at 10.30am. Then it's a rural 15 miles to Canterbury. We'll probably train it back from Whitstable or thereabouts depending on whether we fancy more miles or not. It'll be that sort of day. Bring your swimmie. Or not.

Tuesday 7 May: Intermediate maintenance course. 7-10pm. The Forum@Greenwich. £30 for 4 evenings. Just turn up.

Saturday 11 May: Woolwich Waterfront Leisure Centre:
10am – noon: learn to ride class. Some bikes provided. £5/£2.
1-3pm: Cycle Skills for those who have just started. £5/£2.

The ride is free but there's an admission charge for the palace or gardens. Lunch at Hampton Court. 25 miles, train back (to Waterloo) or stay with us for a longer ride home. Sunday 9th June: Waterlink Way part II, Gatwick to Eastbourne. 9.45am London Bridge station, by W.H.Smith. We'll carry on where we left off the week before on Sustrans' route 21, from the lower level of the goods lift. 49 miles, 30 of those traffic free. A bit of an explore as this is the first time we've done this part of the route, so be prepared for a few bridleways! The map suggests it's not too hilly. Train back from Eastbourne to Victoria. Saturday 15 June: 10am Cutty Sark: Locks, Docks and One smoking ferry. It's never the same twice. An all-day gentle explore of London's fast evolving docklands with 5,10, 20 and 30 mile options. The first 5 miles are all along the Thames Path and very child friendly.

Sunday 16 June: 10am Cutty Sark: The Peaks of Greenwich. 20 undulating miles to visit all six of Greenwich's protected views.

Monday 17 June: 6pm Cutty Sark: The Southwark mob: to Dulwich Park for a picnic with Southwark Cyclists and London Recumbents wonderful selection of bikes to try, and the octopus. Bring your own picnic.

Tuesday 18 June: 7pm Cutty Sark: Remember the Dome: recreate that amazing evening when we first rode round the outside of the Dome. To The Pilot pub. A massive 3 miles.

Wednesday 19 June: 7.30am sharp Cutty Sark: The Late to Worker: a gentle ride along the Thames Path up to London, breakfast with Southwark at the Island Cafe, and work.

Wednesday 19 June: 6pm Cutty Sark. Love Lea Valley. Under the foot tunnel to the Isle of Dogs and gently up the Lea Valley and home before dusk.

Thursday 20 June: 7pm Cutty Sark: East Again. And back into the sunset before dark. Down the Thames Path as far as we get. Done sunset, now for sunrise...

Friday 21 June: 2am Cutty Sark. Yes. 2am: The Midsummer Madness Ride: today's the longest day of the year. The magical summer solstice. Ride with us through the deserted streets of London to see the sun come up from Primrose Hill. Meet bikes from all over London, join in anywhere along the way:

3am: Bar Italia, Frith Street
4.15am: top of Primrose Hill
4.43am: sunrise!
6am: breakfast at the Island Cafe, Union Street/Southwark Bridge Road junction

etc. The slow 20 mile explore that's never the same twice.

Saturday 27 July: Herne Hill Velodrome: we've taken it over again. Borrow one of their track bikes and ride the endless O. No cars, no traffic lights, no potholes, no junctions.....no brakes, no gears, no back-peddling. Huge fun, a different sort of biking. This pro-trained session qualifies you to use the track. 11am Cutty Sark Gardens for slow ride there with coffee, or there at Burbage Road, 1pm for 1.30pm start. £10.

Sunday 28 July: The Last Resort. Whitstable to Dover. About 60 miles through 13 hugely varied seaside towns, almost all on bike paths. Lots of return stations en route if you want a shorter ride. Bring a swimmie. Meet 8.30am Cutty Sark Gardens for ride to Bromley South station for the 9.28am train to Whitstable, arrive 10.27am. Train back from Dover.

Sunday 28 July: last day of the Tour de France. Where to watch it?

August 2002

Saturday 3 August: 10am Cutty Sark Gardens: The flat, paved but off-road Waterlink Way ride. 10 miles in all. Bring picnic lunch. An Easy-Going ride for families and beginners.

Sunday 4 August: It's Greenwich Foot Tunnel's 100th birthday today. It was opened to the public on that Saturday in 1902 with no ceremony at all. So let's celebrate a bit. 10am Cutty Sark Gardens: if enough people turn up we can link all the way through to Island Gardens. 11am: Binnie, Black and Veatch (the firm founded by Alexander Binnie, the tunnel engineer) will say some words by the tunnel entrance and then go to the champagne brunch they've laid on in old Royal Naval College. This is by invitation from them only. We've got some. Ask. 1pm: meet by the tunnel entrance for easy river ride that uses both tunnels.

Wednesday 7 August: our monthly meeting. 7.30-9pm at The Forum@Greenwich, 177.5 Trafalgar Road, Greenwich. Informal and effective. Open to all to plan the future. Optional move to the pub opposite at 9pm sharp.

Saturday 10 August: the always different Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry: 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. A fascinating and slow circular explore. Nearly all on bike paths. Stay all day for 30 miles, or leave half way at lunchtime.

Sunday 11 August: London Canal Loop: up the Lea Valley towpath then a hop west onto more canals and back home another way. A longish day on the mixed canal-side surfaces. September 2002

Saturday 7 September: an Easygoing ride for novices and improvers. A gentle ride up the Thames to the South Bank with lots of stops on the way. 6 easy miles. Train or ride home. No big roads at all. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens

Saturday 7 September: 10am CSG. Lewisham ride to Chislehurst caves.

Sunday 8 September: Dungeness! An amazing landscape. The Romney Marshes, the Dungeness shingle, Prospect Cottage, and a very fine nuclear power station. Bring your swimmie. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for ride to London Bridge mainline station then 10.06 train to Ashford. (Engineering works that day, so we have to get out there, no problem). Train back from cute Rye. About 40 lovely miles. Or a few more if you fancy the massive hill into Hastings.

Monday 9 September: 3.20pm: on site. Opening of Halfpenny Hatch Bridge over Deptford Creek. Norman Road.

Monday 9 September: Afterworker. Meet 6pm Cutty Sark Gardens. Halfpenny Hatch bridge over Deptford Creek opened earlier today, so we explore the Creek and the new bits thereabouts. A short, slow explore.

Saturday 14 September: 9.30am Honor Oak Station. Lewisham ride: Gatwick to Eastbourne.

Sunday 15 September: Locks, docks and that smoking ferry: 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. An all day cruise round docklands, drop out at lunchtime or stay all day.

Wednesday 18 September: 8.30am City Hall. Bike breakfast with Ken. Pre-registration essential.

Wednesday 18 September: Afterworker. The Limehouse Cut. 6pm Cutty Sark Gardens.

Saturday 21 September: we take over the Velodrome again. 1.30pm-4.30pm. Get professionally trained in about 20 minutes, and you'll be flying round the endless track on a borrowed bike. No cars, no potholes, no pedestrians, no brakes, no gears, no back-peddling. Meet at 11am Cutty Sark Gardens for a slow ride there via coffee in Dulwich Park and London Recumbents, or there at 1pm at Herne Hill Velodrome, Burbage Road, Dulwich Village. £10 covers everything except refreshments. £5 concessions. Under 16's free. Youngest so far? 8.25yo. (It won't rain, so we won't have to ride somewhere else).

Sunday 22 September: European Car Free Day. Greenwich Council is, very sadly, doing nothing this year (other than taking a nicely long time to fix that hole on Blackheath Hill). Meet 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens and visit the 3 main London CFD sites: Tower Bridge, Bloomsbury and Mare Street. Then back to Tower Bridge for 4pm and the 5pm ride over.

Sunday 22 September: Thames Barrier closed all day: 8-6pm. It's worth seeing it again, deliberate creation of loads of white water to scour the riverbed. Bring your surf-board.

Saturday 28 September: The Bike Show at the Business Design Centre, Islington. Entry fee. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for easy canalside ride and look round show. About 8 miles there.

Sunday 29 September: Down the Grand Union Canal. Harpenden down to Brentford, then back along the Thames Path. 50 canal-side miles, 60 in all. Meet 10am London Bridge mainline station for 10.30am to Harpenden. Roger: 07956 254836.

Wednesday 2 October: monthly meeting. 7.30-9pm. The Forum@Greenwich. 177.5 Trafalgar Road, SE10. Pub opposite after. All very welcome.

Saturday 5 October: an Easygoing ride for novices and improvers. To Surrey Docks farm along the Thames. Very family friendly. 3 miles there. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens.

Sunday 6 October: Barbara's Wandle wander. Ride the river trail from Croydon to Wandsworth and the Thames. 12 flat miles. Train back from Wandsworth, or ride back. Meet 9.45am outside Brockley station for 10.06 to Croydon.

Sunday 6 October: Greenwich & Bexley Hospice Charity Ride. Helpers needed.

Sunday 6 October: The Ride of the Falling Leaves. Organised by Mosquito Bikes. A hilly scenic tour of the North Downs and Sevenoaks Weald starting and ending at Herne Hill velodrome. 70 and 110k options. Saturday 12 October: Cliffe, the Hoo peninsula and the marshlands. Meet 9.45am Cutty Sark Gardens and ride to Lewisham station to get on the 10.26 train to Gravesend. (The 10.15 from London Bridge). Arrives 11.06. A flat easy all day explore of around 30 miles. (Some of us will ride the 25 miles to Gravesend to meet that train. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens, but phone Barry on 07905 889 005 to say so)

Saturday/Sunday 19th/20th October: London-Brighton full-moon bike ride organised by Canary Wharf cyclists. Meet: Canary Wharf by main exit of Jubilee line station at 11:30pm or Cutty Sark Gardens by foot tunnel at midnight. or Caterham train station at about 1:30-2:00am (last train from Charing Cross arrives Caterham 0:41am). Route: Exit London via a route that avoids traffic. Pick up riders at Caterham. We then ride along empty roads (hopefully moonlit!), hit Ditchling Beacon before sunrise, and sweep downhill into Brighton for an (optional) sea swim around dawn or a kip on the beach. Breakfast at The Market Diner and train home. Distance: c60 miles (40 miles from Caterham), some hills, speed - paced for all. Saturday 2 November: London Cycling Campaign Annual General Meeting. 12.30-4.30pm at 356 Holloway Road, London N7. This is the main LCC meeting of the year and an excellent way to see how it works and get involved. Saturday 2 November: Fireworks Ride: meet at 7pm Cutty Sark Gardens for a ride up the hill to Blackheath and that big firework display that starts at 8pm. We'll meet the Lewisham crew by All Saints Church on the south-east corner of the heath and then pub it later, maybe the bike friendly Dog&Bell, Prince Street, Deptford. 07905 889 005 will find us.

Sunday 3 November: 10am Cutty Sark Gardens: Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry: our famous ever-changing tour east along the Thames Path and into the heart of docklands. A slow explore along quiet roads. About 15 easy miles. Or stay all day and do 30. Fascinating.

Saturday 9 November: Herne Hill velodrome. We take it over for the afternoon. Borrow a track bike and get professionally trained how to ride it. Really supportive and fun. Try a very different type of cycling to try. Kids too. Meet 11am Cutty Sark Gardens for a slow ride there via coffee. Or meet there at Burbage Road at 1pm for the 1.30pm start. £10 covers bike and training. (But rain cancels. Check on 07905 889 005).

Sunday 10 November: Beach Huts in Winter: About 45 flattish miles along the Stour estuary then through Walton and Frinton-on-Sea. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens and ride to Liverpool Street station for the Manningtree train. Or at Liverpool Street at 10am. Train back.

Saturday 16 November: Herne Hill velodrome. Open meeting of the Steering Group on its future. 10am start there at Burbage Road.

But no train. 80 medium paced miles. Flat and undulating landscape with plenty of villages en route. Mainly on quiet country roads after London.. Bring lights. (Southwark Cyclists. Friday 6 December: The Billingsgate trawl: a preworker slow ride to the fabled fish market for a good look round and breakfast there. Meet: 3.15am at Peckham Pulse under the big yawning or 4am Cutty Sark Gardens for the foot tunnel stairs (no lifts that early) then easy ride there. Back to CSG for about 8am, then work or wherever. 4 mile round trip from CSG.

Saturday 7 December: Mistletoe mission. Easygoing ride to Borough Market for the shopping. Designed for families and improvers, but all welcome as ever. Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the 5 easy miles riverside ride there. Train or ride back. 07905 889 005.

Sunday 8 December: Becton Greenway and the Bow Island Ride: an explore of the 4 canals that border Bow. 30 slow towpathy miles. Almost no roads. 10am Cutty Sark Gardens. Then to the Woolwich Ferry down the Thames Path, and over. Barry. 07905 889 005.

Saturday 14 December: Greenwich Cyclists Ceilidh. The Muckers live. Fast, traditional, Celtic, 7 piece fiddle band. Irresistable dancing, pay bar, internal bike-park. 8pm until midnight at the West Greenwich Arts Centre, 141 Greenwich High Road. Tickets include mid-evening buffet and are on sale now. £12 or £8 unwaged/under 18's. £15 on door, if available. Booking in advance is highly recommended as this event will sell out. Tickets will be available for purchase on Greenwich Cyclist rides until sold out.
